Lessons Learned

Amos 4

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Bethel means house of God

·        This is the place where God spoke to Jacob.

·        Jeroboam set up a golden calf here.

2. Gilgal is the place Israel came to when they crossed the Jordan into the promised land and set up twelve stones as a reminder of what God had done for them.

3. Bashan was east of the Sea of Galilee. It was 37 miles wide and 56 miles long. It was exceptionally fertile with lush pastures and cropland.

4. Comparing women to cows was not offensive in the culture Amos was writing to.

5. The shortest part of your existence is your life on earth, use it wisely to prepare for your eternal life.

6. Worship is about God, for He alone is worthy of our worship:

“Worthy are you, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they existed and were created.”  Revelation 4:11

7. “having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.” 2 Timothy 3:5

8. When believers face difficulty, remember:

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

9. Application:

·        God holds people accountable for how they treat others.

·        God’s discipline is intended to be redemptive.

·        Worship is about praising God — Not boasting about personal sacrifice on behalf of God.

·        We will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

1) Those who trust Jesus as their savior will have eternal life, (John 3:15) but your works will be tested by fire (1 Corinthians 3:11-15).

2) Those who reject Jesus will be sent into eternal punishment. Matthew 25:31-46
