Introduction to Amos

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Amos was written approximately 850 B. C.

2. Amos is called ‘the prophet of social justice.’

3. Jeroboam II was king of the northern kingdom and Uzziah was king of the southern kingdom.

4. Amos lived in Tekoa which is about 5 miles southeast of Bethlehem. (He lived in the southern kingdom.)

5. Amos was not born into a prophetic family. Amos 7:14

6. It was a time of economic prosperity for the wealthy in both Israel and Judah.

7. It was a time of military superiority for the northern kingdom. Jeroboam II was able to gain victory over neighboring enemies and expand the borders.

8. Amos is one of the twelve minor prophets—they were all contained in one scroll.

9. The minor prophets are called minor because they are all short books.

10. Amos’ name means ‘to be a burden’ or ‘to carry a burden.’

11. Amos lived in a time of much outward religious activity, but very little true faith. People were idolaters.

12. Amos relates God’s wrath to Israel’s violation of the Mosaic covenant.

Lessons Learned

Amos 2:4-16

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Believing the lie leads to judgment.

2. God sees the oppression of the poor and needy.

3. It is good for you to remember the path from which God redeemed you.

4. Both the Old Testament and New Testament call for you to be holy. Leviticus 11:4 and 1 Peter 1:16

5. Living outside God’s umbrella of protection opens the way for you to reap the consequences.

6. When God judges evil in the world, there will not be a place to hide.

7. God’s judgment will be fair:

“But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.” (Jesus speaking) Luke12:48

8. “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Jesus speaking) Matthew 5:16

9. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2

10. “He will not always chide,
nor will he keep his anger forever.” Psalm 103:9

11. Application:

·        God is long-suffering but judgment will come for the disobedient.

·        God expects His people to be a reflection of His character rather than blending in with popular culture.

·        Thank God for the spiritual examples He has placed in your life.
