Lessons Learned
Gospel of John 11:1-46
by Wayne Gaeddert
1. This is the final public miracle Jesus performed. John 12 begins Passion Week.
2. The resurrection of Lazarus by Jesus points to the deity of Jesus.
3. Jesus had previously resuscitated two people:
Luke 7:11-17 The widow’s son.
Luke 8:40-56 Jairus’ daughter.
4. The practice of the day was to bury those who died within 24 hours because they did not embalm the body to slow decay.
5. After four days a dead body has deteriorated so that only the skin is holding it together.
6. The impact this miracle had:
The scribes and Pharisees ramped up their effort to kill Jesus.
It points to the deity of Jesus.
Many people believed in Jesus as a result.
Some people report to the Pharisees.
It sets the stage for the triumphal entry into Jerusalem in chapter 12.
7. Death is the result of sin in a fallen world.
8. “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” Genesis 2:17 ESV
9. This miracle was a precursor for His own death and resurrection.
10. The seven signs that John presents in chapters 2-11.
Water to wine. 2:1-11
Healing the official’s son. 4:43-54
Healing the invalid in Bethesda. 5:1-15
Feeding the five thousand. 6:1-15, 25-69
Walking on the water. 6:12-21
Healing the man born blind. 9:1-41
Raising of Lazarus. 11:1-44
11. “Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.” John 5:28-29 ESV
12. Application:
God engineers events for your life to grow your faith.
What you believe about Jesus is the most critical point to determine what kind of resurrection you will experience. See John 5:28-29
Not everyone will believe when undeniable evidence about Jesus is before them.
