Lessons Learned

Gospel of John 12:1-11

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. Broad outline of John:

  •  John chapters 1-11 cover 3 years of the ministry of Jesus.

  • John chapters 12-19 cover the last week before Jesus was crucified on the cross.

  • John chapters 20-21 cover the resurrection and appearances of Jesus after the resurrection.

2. Parallel texts are Matthew 26:6-13 and Mark 14:3-9.

3. There is nothing too valuable to give to Jesus. He is worthy of everything we have.

4. It would be an embarrassment for a woman to let her hair down in public.

5. A denarius was a day’s wage for a laborer.

6. Three hundred denarii would be one year’s wage when you account for Sabbaths.

7. Judas knew the price of everything but the value of nothing. Dr. John MacArthur

8. Each day of our lives should honor Jesus as Lord and Savior.

9. The Roman pound was equal to 11.5 oz in our system of weights and measures.

10. Nard was used at funerals to cover the smell of decay.

11. Nard was expensive because it was imported from the Himalayan mountains of India.

12. When Jesus responded to the disciples about who was the greatest and what a leader did he said, “But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves.” Luke 22:26 ESV

13. Application:

  • Believers should use their resources to honor Jesus.

  • Believers should affirm others as they are honoring Jesus.

  • Unbelief will ridicule as wasteful whatever you give in honor of Jesus.
