Lessons Learned

Gospel of John 12:20-33

by Wayne Gaeddert

1. All of John chapters 13 – 17 takes place the night before Jesus is crucified on the cross.

2. Judas has left the group of disciples to betray Jesus. See John 13:30.

3. The suffering of Jesus brought glory to Him by:

·        Providing salvation for all who will believe in Jesus.

·        Destroyed the power of sin and death.

·        Fully satisfied God’s requirement to pay for sin.

·        Being resurrected, never to die again.

4. God’s justice prevailed at the cross. The debt owed by sinners was fully paid.

5. Love is not natural, a life must be transformed by God’s power in order to love.

6. Love is listed first in the list of the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22.

7. Only humble people can love one another. Dr. John MacArthur

8. The Jews had no ‘room’ for Jesus, but Jesus has a room for all who believe in Him.

9. “Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.” 1 Corinthians 10:12

10. It is by the grace of God that we do not fall into sin.

11. Jesus loves us even though He already knows how and when we will fail Him.

12. Jesus connected His going away (John 13:33) with His mission to prepare a place for His followers (John 14:2) and the promise of His return (John 14:3).

13. Jesus is the only way to heaven.

14. Jesus is the only truth that leads to heaven.

15. Jesus is the only one Who can give eternal life in heaven.

16. Application:

·        Do you live your life so that your life brings glory to God?

è  “To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 ESV

è  “whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” 1 Peter 4:11 ESV

è  “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians 3:20-21 ESV

·        Love is the mark of true followers of Jesus.

·        Jesus is coming back to take those who, by faith, trust Jesus alone for salvation to a place prepared for them.
