Jeremiah 2:1-13
Lessons Learned
by Wayne Gaeddert
1. Jeremiah 2:1 through Jeremiah 3:5 describes Israel as a faithless spouse.
2. Jeremiah declares that God’s chosen people had committed spiritual adultery by loving idols instead of loving God who had delivered them from slavery and given them the land of Canaan.
3. The Israelite's promised to keep the covenant God made with them:
“Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the rules. And all the people answered with one voice and said, ‘All the words that the Lord has spoken we will do.’” Exodus 24:3 ESV
4. Parents influence future generations to serve the Lord or to turn them away from serving the Lord.
5. Don’t allow your love for Jesus to be replaced with worthless things that are not eternal but will be burned up.
6. You are precious to Jesus:
He was ridiculed, mistreated, and sentenced to die on a cross in order to make it possible for you to live with Him in heaven. You have a responsibility to live your life to honor Him and not forget the sacrifice He made on your behalf.
7. Believers must guard against drifting away from God and His love.
8. Three types of water sources in Israel:
Running water (living water) from a spring or river.
Water from a well dug deep enough so that groundwater rises in the hole.
Water from a cistern is runoff water collected during the rainy season. Dirt and debris are also washed into the cistern with the water.
9. “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue.” 2 Peter 1:3
10. Spiritual disciplines to maintain your relationship with God.
Prayer
Bible Study
Connection with a local church
Daily scripture reading
Memorize scripture
Meditate on God’s word
11. Application:
Recall how God has demonstrated grace in your life.
Trusting anyone or anything other than God, leads to judgment on you and future generations that follow your lead.
“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.” Hebrews 1:1-2 ESV
“Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.” Hebrews 2:1 ESV
