Jeremiah 29:1-14

Lessons Learned

1. King Jehoiachin is also known as King Jeconiah.

2. King Jeconiah had reigned only three months before he surrendered to Nebuchadnezzar’s army. 2 Kings 24:8

3. Nebuchadnezzar served as God’s instrument of judgment for Judah.

4. From the rise of Babylon to its fall was 66 years. Holman NKJV Study Bible

5. 2 Kings 24 records how King Jeconiah surrendered to Nebuchadnezzar’s army and the inhabitants of Jerusalem were taken as captives to Babylon. This is the first deportation.

6. Jeremiah 29:4-23 is a letter from Jeremiah in Jerusalem to the exiles in Babylon.

7. The word translated garden in verse 5 often describes an orchard or grove of fruit trees. Dr. Brian Beyer

8. Biblical hope always indicates confidence and assurance in who God is and what He is doing in your life.

9. Seek God with your whole heart and you will find Him.

10. Hananiah was a false prophet who proclaimed the exile would be very short—two years. Jeremiah 28

13. God has plans for you, but you must abandon your plans and submit to His plans.

14. Application:

·      This text amplifies God’s sovereignty over the events of history for His people. Dr. Bob Utley

a)  I have sent into exile, Jer. 29:4,14,18,20

b) I have not sent them (i.e., the false prophets in Babylon), Jer. 29:9

c)  I will visit you (i.e., in Babylon), Jer. 29:10

d) I will fulfill My good word (i.e., to bring you back to Palestine), Jer. 29:10

e)  I have plans for you (two emphatic "I's"), Jer. 29:11

f)   I will listen to you, Jer. 29:12

g) I will restore your fortunes, Jer. 29:14

h) I will gather you from all the nations...where I have driven you, Jer. 29:14

  • Serving God does not exclude you from suffering and pain, but His promises to believers provide hope for a future because we know Him who controls the future.

  • We are instructed to pray for our leaders so that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life.

“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,” 1 Timothy 2:1-3
