Jeremiah 35:1-19
Lessons Learned
by Wayne Gaeddert
1. Last kings of Judah:
Josiah (627 – 609 BC)- The last good king. He was killed in battle with Egypt. Egypt did not want a fight with Judah but Josiah would not stand down when Egypt was marching to war with Assyria. 2 Kings 23:29.
Jehohaz (609 BC) reigned 3 months. Egypt took him captive. 2 Kings 23:34b
Jehoiakim (609 -597 BC)- Puppet king put in place by Egypt 2 Kings 23:34a. When Babylon conquered Egypt he was then forced to pay tribute to Babylon. But after 3 years he rebelled against Babylon. Babylon came in force to defeat him and take the first wave of captives to Babylon.
Zedekiah (597-586 BC)- Puppet king put in place by Babylon. When Zedekiah rebelled, Babylon returned to destroy Jerusalem and take the second wave of captives.
2. The Rechabites joined King Jehu in the northern kingdom to eliminate Baal worship. 2 Kings 10:15-25. Rachab is also referenced in 1 Chron. 2:55
3. The Rechabites obeyed the command of one man that was given 300 years earlier. Judah had rejected all the prophets that God sent to bring them back into covenant with God.
4. God expects His people to honor Him through their obedience.
5. Violating your conscience is a sin.
6. Verse 13 is the key:
“Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Go and say to the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will you not receive instruction and listen to my words? declares the Lord.”
7. Listening to God should be the priority of every person.
8. The theological point of this lesson is found in verses 16-17:
Not listening to the God of hosts, the most powerful being, results in judgment.
9. God’s word of judgment to the disobedient is as sure as His word of blessing to the obedient.
10. God provides faithful examples we can follow.
11. Application:
· God has given us His word to direct our daily life. Rejecting and neglecting His word is sin.
· God stands against those who disregard Him.
· God honors those who faithfully serve Him.
