Mark 16:1-14
Lessons Learned
by Wayne Gaeddert
1. Parallel passages of the resurrection are:
Matthew 28:1-7, Mark 16:1-8’ Luke 24:1-12, John 20:1-9
2. Although Jesus had spoken of his resurrection, no one was expecting to find an empty tomb.
3. The women Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome were the first followers of Jesus to know about the resurrection. Mark 16:1
4. The women evidently were unaware of the Roman guard that had been placed at the tomb on Saturday to keep people away. Matthew 27:62-66
5. The stone would easily roll down the slope to close the entrance to the tomb, rolling it back up the slope would be very difficult.
6. The Jews considered any part of a day as a day. Jesus was in the tomb Friday before 6pm, all day Saturday, and part of Sunday (which began Saturday after 6pm). Therefore, this counted as 3 days.
7. The women came to the tomb to express their love for Jesus by giving his body the proper treatment for burial.
8. The women obeyed the law by not coming to the tomb on the Sabbath. Luke 23:56
9. 1 Corinthians 15:23 refers to Jesus as the ‘first fruits’ of resurrection, guaranteeing that when the harvest is ready, all those expressing faith in Jesus will be resurrected with him. (See Leviticus 23:10 the Old Testament reference to ‘first fruits’).
10. Without the resurrection, we have no gospel (good news).
11. Peter is specifically mentioned to be told of the resurrection because he needed to know he was not rejected because he had denied being a follower of Jesus. Mark 16:7
12. The disciples were to meet Jesus in Galilee (Mark 14:28, 16:7). This is probably the place that Jesus appeared to more than 500 brothers at one time. (1 Corinthians 15:6)
13. By the resurrection of Jesus, God transformed the tragedy into a great victory.
“Death is swallowed up in victory.”
“O Death, where is your sting?
O Hades, where is your victory?” 1 Corinthians 15:54b-55
14. Preparation day was Friday. The Jews did all the work (preparation) on Friday so they were ready for Saturday (Sabbath) in which they did not work.
15. The women were shocked by:
A. The great earthquake. Matthew 28:2
B. The appearance of the angel. Matthew 28:2
C. The message of the angel, “He is not here, He is risen.” Mark 16:6,
16. Christmas initiated the plan of redemption, Easter sealed the deal.
17. Prophets had proclaimed a resurrection. Psalm 16:10
18. Adam’s sin resulted in death for all his descendants. Romans 5:12, 18a
19. Jesus’ obedience and righteousness results in life (resurrection) for all His spiritual descendants. Romans 5:18-19
20. Resurrection day appearances of Jesus:
A. Mary Magdalene John 20:11-18
B. The women while on the way to tell the disciples. Matthew 28:9
C. Two men on the Emmaus Road Luke 24:13-32
D. Simon Luke 24:34
E. The disciples without Thomas. John 20:19-24
21. “It is unlikely that Mark could have intended terminating his work with the banal anti-climax of the statement of verse 8. The likelihood, therefore, is either that Mark was prevented through death from consummating his story, or else that he finished it, but that the concluding columns of his scroll (which would form the scroll’s outer covering), was accidentally destroyed before ever it had been copied. It would not be unreasonable to suppose that such a final column contained; the story of an appearance of the risen Jesus to the frightened women mentioned in verse 8, which calmed their fears, and enabled them to go with confidence to the disciples and proclaim to them the fact of Jesus’ resurrection.” FF Bruce Commentary p. 1180
22. Application:
· Where do you go to find Jesus?
è At the cross we see Him pay our sin debt.
è The empty tomb testifies to His resurrection.
è He has ascended to the right hand of God.
“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.” Colossians 3:1
· Throughout the ministry of Jesus He rebuked unbelief. In which corner do you stand?
