2. The backdrop for the teaching of chapter 16 is the sin of Nadab and Abihu in chapter 10.
3. According to Leviticus 16:17, no one was allowed in the Tent of Meeting on the Day of Atonement except the High Priest.
4. The Day of Atonement was one day per year, the 10th day of the 7th month (Sept. - Oct.).
5. God requires atonement because he is holy, and we are not.
6. On the Day of Atonement, the high priest entered the Most Holy place to offer a blood sacrifice, first for this own sins then for the sins of the people.
7. Entering God’s holy presence is acceptable only when you prepare yourself according to God’s instructions.
8. The two goats:
· The one sacrificed signified God’s penalty for their sin, the death of an animal substituted in their place.
· The scapegoat met the need of the sinner to carry their sin away outside the camp, never to be seen again.
9. “Jesus is both the sacrifice that paid for the penalty of our sin and the One who takes away our sin.” Dr. Kevin Shrum
10. The purpose of the Day of Atonement was to cleanse the Israelites from all their sins.
11. Without the gospel, there is no forgiveness of sin.
12. Any person who acknowledges their sin and trusts in the atoning work of Jesus (death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus) for forgiveness of sin and salvation will be saved.
Rom 10:9-13
13. We do not gather to offer sacrifices for our sins today because the sacrifice of Jesus’ life covers sin for all time.
14. Worship today should focus on God’s grace extended to his people.
15. “Man-made religion is attractive because it appeals to our pride and self-sufficiency; it is deadly because it keeps us in our sin and separated from God.” Dr. Kevin Shrum
